McDonald's has removed a Christmas advert made with Artificial Intelligence following receiving widespread criticism on social media.

The short film was created with the help of AI-generated video and was originally published online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Audience Response and Removal

Following its publication, audiences online criticized the employment of AI in the commercial. A number of described it as "uncanny" and "awkwardly stitched together".

"This experience represents an important learning as we explore the effective utilization of Artificial Intelligence," commented a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was developed for McDonald's by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of scenarios that often go badly over the festive season, using the tagline "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI in Advertising

Campaigns that feature AI tools have emerged as a increasing phenomenon among major brands, notably for the holiday period.

  • Another beverage giant has also released back-to-back AI-generated holiday ads.
  • Technical Challenges: Since clips created with current AI video tools are more likely to degrade the longer they run, most AI video outputs tend to be roughly six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also provoked concerns about automation in the production sector, with some critics noting it could affect work for camera crews.

Response from the Creators

After the video's removal, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.

According to her, the development required "over a month and a half" and involved producing "countless iterations" which were then shaped in post-production "in the same way we would on any high-craft production".

"This wasn't just an AI gimmick," she said. "We consider it a finished piece."

Mixed Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was largely criticized, the sentiment for some AI-generated campaigns has been divisive.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated Christmas ad from Coca-Cola reportedly received a significant "positive feedback" from online commenters.

However, several companies have also faced criticism for using AI in advertising. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that critics called "low-effort" and "uncanny".

The incident underscores the evolving conversation within the advertising and creative industries about the trade-off between new tools and audience reception.
