European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
